Barbara Stetter
retired from teaching in June 2011 after having moved from the New York City area to Glace Bay, N.S. to
implement a band program in the school system. Thirty-eight years later, Glace Bay has a vibrant instrumental program in grades
4 through 12 featuring four concert bands, jazz bands, choral groups and guitar ensembles. Although the bands have performed
across Canada and in the United States, the highlight of her teaching career has been The Glace Bay High School Senior Band's
performance at Carnegie Hall, in her hometown of New York City in March 1997. Barbara is an outstanding oboe player and sought-after
as a clinician/adjudicator. She received the NSBA Distinguished Band Directors Award in 2007 and was recognized by the Cape
Breton International Drum Festival in 2008 for her outstanding contribution to music, especially percussion, in the Cape Breton
area. Barbara is currently president of the Nova Scotia Band Association, Secretary of the Canadian Band Association, Coordinator/Manager
of the National Youth Band of Canada and coordinator of the Cape Breton Regional Musicfest, held annually at the historic
Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay. She was the guest conductor of the Nova Scotia Junior Wind Ensemble for 2009-2010.
In the past, Barbara has served on the executive boards of the NSMEA, NSBA and the Nova Scotia Provincial Honor Band.
